Nelson Mandela Championship 2013

MandelWe have taken somewhat of a Winter break in preparation for a big 2014 at DownThe18th. Our end of year awards will be with you over the coming weeks! But with the passing of Nelson Mandela, it is only right we do a quick preview for the tournament named after him. Whoever wins this week will remember this one for the rest of his life.

It will be played at the Mount Edgecombe CC in South Africa. The yardage of the course tells the whole story, 6,612 yards. With a lot of water around and tight fairways, anyone who loves an iron will be in their element this week. We’ve got four names for you that SHOULD suit this course down to a tee…

The Tournament has also be moved forward a day to avoid clashes with Nelson Mandela’s funeral. So get your bets in early.

The Accuracy Artist

The Accuracy Artist

Adilson Da Silva (50/1 various)

Whenever there is a short, accurate course, one of the tour stalwarts that will always pop into mind is Adilson Da Silva.  The Brazilian was 1st in driving accuracy throughout last season and has a track record of being a tee to green specialist.  On top of that, he lives very near this course so he would have played here many times.  His recent form has been consistently mediocre but there have been some long courses of late and he will relish the chance to grind his teeth into Mount Edgecombe.

Søren Hansen (45/1 StanJames)

We promise there will not be this confusion this week. It isn't Augusta after all..

We promise there will not be this confusion this week. It isn’t Augusta after all..

Søren Hansen has been on our radar for a long time and at the backend of last year, he found some consistent form, which had been lacking previously.  He also shot a 65 at the Alfred Dunhill in Malelene a couple of weeks ago, finishing in a tie for 6th.  This proves his ability in South Africa and he will be looking to continue that going into this week.  The great Dane is a renowned iron guru, who was 1st in GIR for 2013 and he is one of the players who you can trust to avoid all the obstacles this course presents

James Kingston (80/1 Paddy Power)

On such a memorable occasion, it would only be fitting for someone from the home nation to win. We always keep an eye out for Kingston after having him a couple of times in 2013. His game is simple, he hits it straight and keeps the ball in play. Being such a short course, this will play right into his hands. He has recorded two top 20’s in his last four starts and has already won in South Africa in 2013. At 80/1 he will go under the radar for many this week, but certainly keep an eye on him!

Michael Hollick (55/1 Paddy Power)

We always love a home favorite and it doesn’t get better than Michael Hollick, the South African’s home course is none other than the track we find ourselves at this week. This will without doubt give him a huge advantage. And to enhance his chances even more, he has recorded four top 6 finishes in his last eight starts! 55/1 may seem short for someone not many of you will know, but we can assure you the bet will be worth it. (Not to be mixed up with the American actor who, if you are interested, was the voice of Niko Bellic in  the video game Grand Theft Auto 4)
